Anna George

Anna discovered weaving in 2016, when her husband bought her a rigid heddle loom as a gift. She found weaving to be a wonderful escape from a demanding job in the front-line emergency ambulance service.

Since then, she has relocated to a studio near Dornoch in the Scottish Highlands, and her passion for all things woolly has taken over. Weaving is Anna's primary art form, though she enjoys the whole process of turning a fleece into a finished item, from processing to spinning to weaving.

Anna describes herself as an ethical weaver, and her work is inspired by both the natural beauty and the farming traditions of the Highlands. She places great importance in supporting local crofters and farmers, and using sustainable methods, weaving unique and beautiful items from recycled fabrics and local fleeces.

Anna's Pieces for Forgotten Fleece Tales

Anna is creating an artistic wall hanging, representing a stylised view of a Highland glen. Taking inspiration from the segmented linework of lino cut prints, she will recreate one of the beautiful landscapes on her doorstep using hand spun and woven wool, processed from rare breed fleeces sourced from local farmers including Gotland and Herdwick sheep. Combining different techniques and textures, the piece will offer a snapshot not only of the natural beauty of the far North Highlands, but also its bounty, showcasing the many specialist wools from the area that are too often overlooked.
