Lovat Mill

Nestled on the banks of the River Teviot, Hawick's Lovat Mill is renowned as "The Home of Tweed." With roots tracing back centuries, weaving in Hawick began as a cottage industry, utilising local wool and the river’s abundant water supply. Today, Lovat Mill carries this rich heritage forward, blending tradition with innovation.

Drawing from an extensive design archive dating back to the 1890s, Lovat Mill produces world-class tweeds, luxurious cashmere, and specialist wool suiting fabrics. While the mill embraces modern advancements such as state-of-the-art Dornier looms, its commitment to handcrafted quality remains unchanged.

Rather than mass production, Lovat Mill works closely with a select group of discerning clients, designing exclusive, made-to-order fabrics. With around half of its production exported worldwide, the mill’s reputation for woven excellence continues to flourish, honouring its historical weaving legacy while shaping the future of textile craftsmanship.

Lovat Mill's Piece for Forgotten Fleece Tales

Lovat Mill have created a beautiful Bothy Blanket from dark and light drab wool for the exhibition. This is a fully recycled and repurposed 100% wool throw, representing a closed-loop process all completed in the mill. The blanket is woven using industrial waste from the mill such as end of cone yarns, selvedge waste, and waste cloth, which is stripped back and returned to fibre then respun into yarn.

This process shortens the staple length of the fibres, usually prompting fabric manufacturers to add longer fibres of polyester to help the recycled wool spin up properly. Due to this, recycled wool is usually made up of 90% wool to 10% polyester. Not wanting to add any more plastic to the process, Lovat have instead added a small amount of long-fibred new wool into the recycled fibres, resulting in a completely recycled 100% wool item.
